Tony Stark is who he is inside and out of the suit. Iron Man is in it for atonement. Tony Stark saw that he had to change - as a human being - and he was already changed by the time he builds the second suit and becomes Iron Man for real.
He was blissfully ignorant of any kind of suffering and was confronted by and forced to acknowledge his own suffering, in the form of his irreparable heart damage and social isolation and the suffering he has directly caused others through his livelihood.
Stark is good at solving problem and being resourceful. The first suit fails him spectacularly. As an engineer, Tony knows this and it's built into his creative process - trial and error are a huge part of his success for he uses the knowledge he's gained from the process.
He is empathetic and doesn't kill for revenge when he was in Afghanistan. He takes out the terrorists holding guns to the hostages and leaves the leader for the village to deal with and then he goes to destroy the weaponry.
