T.J is a childish, needy and feckless; he does not care about his education and thinks it is alright to cheat in the exams. He thinks he is an adult and has repeated years in school. He is irresponsible, silly and immature. He does not pay attention in lessons and thinks it he does not need education. He only thinks about himself and does not show a sense of responsibility. He is losey and does not take life seriously. He wants to be respected and admired and knows that he will work on Harlan Granger's land like his dad.
T.J is self absorbed and wants to be admired. This is apparent in "'got me better friends than y'all! They give me things and treat me like I'm a man and ...they white too...'". This shows that T.J is reconsidering his friendship with the Logan's and going towards his friendship with R.W and Melvin. He wanted the Logan family to look up to him and therefore thought it was a better idea to be friends with white children so he would be seen cool. However he was not true to himself and wants to be envied.
T.J is also streetwise and aware of harsh reality. He knows too much about being black and the consequences. "' Now, this kind of information ain't for the ears of little kids so I really shouldn't tell y'all.'" T.J wanted to tell the Logan children about what happened to a black family and persuading them that he should not be telling them, when he should have not found out about this in the first place. He wanted the Logan children to look up to him and respect him.
T.J could sometimes be jealous and out of hand with his attitude towards the Logan children. This is shown in the line"' all y'all Logans think y'all so doggone much with y'all's new coats and books and shiny new Packards!'" This shows that he is very envious and watchful of the advantages the Logan family get. He tries to get over this by getting the Logans depressed of their new presents. He loses his way as he continued to become more self control and selfish.
