Blacksmith's made anything metal. For the poorest peasant up to the grandest king, they made things for them. Nails, swords, daggers, utensils, kitchen supplies, etc. Because there were few of them, they did a lot of work but were favoured and respected. They also made very comfortable livings as one of the top guilds, mostly in cities during the Renaissance. They also had protection, because knights wouldn't be able to armor themselves with swords if their blacksmith was caught prisoner or killed.
