Attached is the MPAA study, for movie attendence. I had to read it a few times before I understood it. The study period is mid-July 2006 to mid-July 2007 and covers only US attendance. There were 1470 million admissions. This information was probably directly obtained from the theatres. Now, of the people that went to any movies ("moviegoers") during the study period, the average number of movies that they watched were 8.5. So, the number of people seeing one or more movies is 1470/8.5 = 173 million (the report gives 172 million, probably a bit of round-off error). There's another way to look at this. If we try to obtain an average of the number of movies a person went to, we need to include those people who didn't go to any movie in the study period. Of course, there is a part of the population who are too young to see movies. Here are my calculated numbers from their report: Number of people in US population = 245 million Number of movies they saw = 6 Total attendence = 1470 million _____ Number of people seeing one or more movies = 172 million Number of movies they saw = 8.5 Total attendence - approx. 1470 million ___ Total number of people who didn't go to the movie theatre during survey period = 73 million people
70 Million.
In the US it refers to movies that gross over $100 million. Of course, in case of movies budgeted between $100-200 million, they're expected to earn more to be considered a hit.
The name given to movies with sound during the 1920s was "talkies".
Their total budget for all three movies were 363 million.
