The Region of Africa north of the Sahara and west of the Nile that includes the the Atlas Mountains, and the coastal plains of Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria and Libya, these countries situated entirely in the northwestern part of the African Continent are collectively known as Al-Maghreb in Arabian being their main language, and the Maghreb in English, and Le Maghreb in French being secondary languages used most in this region.In 1989 after the formation of the "Arab Maghreb Union" two more regions i.e. the disputed territories of Western Sahara mostly under Moroccan rule and Mauritania were included in this Maghreb-banner, the residents of these countries are known as the Maghrebis or Moors (a name given to the inhabitants of the western Islamic World by Christians that extend from Spain to Tunisia sharing a common homogeneous culture).
The three northernmost French-speaking countries in Africa are Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. These countries are located in the Maghreb region of North Africa. French is one of the official languages spoken in these countries, alongside Arabic in Algeria and Tunisia.
During World War II, the Allied invasion of North Africa in 1942, known as 'Operation Torch,' focused exclusively on French colonial possessions. Thus, the North African nations of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia did not yet exist independently at this time; however, the Allied invasion affected each in varying degrees during and then (in the case of Tunisia) especially after.
Four French-speaking countries in Africa are: Algeria: Located in North Africa, it is the largest country in Africa. Morocco: Situated in the westernmost part of North Africa, it is known for its vibrant culture and historical cities. Senegal: Located on the westernmost point of Africa, it is known for its music, art, and rich history. Ivory Coast (CΓ΄te d'Ivoire): Located on the west coast of Africa, it is known for its diverse culture, wildlife, and economic importance in the region.

In Africa Spain colonized a little region in norther Morocco known as Rif, another little bit in southern Morocco known as Ifni, the Western Sahara and Equatorial Guinea.

Spain gave up on certain regions of Morocco (such as the northern region except Ceuta and Melilla and the southern region except for Ifni and Western Sahara) because French Morocco became an independent country. However, the year is off. This occurred in 1956, not 1953. In 1969, Spain gave Morocco the Ifni region after mounting international pressure and UNGA Resolution 2072. Spain also withdrew from Western Sahara in 1975, after which it was promptly occupied by Morocco in what is known as the Green March.
