Very heavy snowfall in the Tug Hill Plateau region occurs primarily due to its unique geographical features and climatic conditions. The plateau is situated near Lake Ontario, which contributes to significant lake-effect snow as cold air moves over the relatively warmer lake waters, picking up moisture. When this moist air rises over the plateau's higher elevations, it cools rapidly, resulting in intense snowfall. Additionally, the region's elevation and prevailing winds enhance the snowfall amounts, making it one of the snowiest areas in the United States.
