A:Scholars say that the religions of the Canaanites, Hebrews and other North-West Semitic peoples were barely distinguishable at the beginning of the first millennium BCE. More is known about the deities of Israel and Ugarit, from which some understanding of Canaanite beliefs can be arrived at. Each kingdom had its national god, as well as a small number of other major gods and goddesses. El, known in The Bible by the Hebrew plural, Elohim, was the father of the gods. Note that among the Israelites, Elohimsoon became syncretised with Yahweh. Another important god universally acknowledged was Baal. Asherah and Astarte were goddesses likely to have been worshipped. Anat, an important goddess in much of Syria, is not known to have been worshipped in either lron Age Canaan or Israel.

Mark S. Smith (The Early History of God: Yahweh and the Other Deities in Ancient Israel) says that while there were hundreds of gods worshipped in the Levant during the second millennium, no more than ten major gods can be identified in the first millennium BCE.
