The belief in Manifest Destiny was used to justify westward expansion of America's borders in the 1800s. Before that, Britain made treaties with Native American Indians to keep whites on the eastern side of the Appalachian Mountains. Brits in the 1600s believed they owned "shore to shore" but the British had no idea how vast the land was that is now known as the Continental US (or the lower 48 states).
