A physical or chemical change in an organisms environment to which it responds is a stimulus.
To this day, there is no single universal means of defining life. However, most definitions require the following conditions: the organism has metabolism, grows over time, responds to environment and changes accordingly, is composed of one or more cells, has internal homeostasis, responds to stimuli, and is able to reproduce asexually or sexually.
Short answer? Good question. Long answer? Define alive. Generally, it is accepted that a living thing does seven things: 1. it is organized 2. it grows 3. it reproduces 4. it responds to stimuli 5. it takes in energy and gives off waste 6. It maintains its own internal environment 7. it adapts to its environment. Of those, viruses only do 1 and 3, and even then they only do 3 in the presence of bacteria. My answer is that no, viruses are just very complex chemicals.
Only living things adapt to the environment. Uluru is a natural land feature, and not alive. It does not need to adapt to the environment.
Nutrient broth usually increases movement in amoebas.

The Receptor senses changes in the environment and responds by sending information to the Control Center along the Afferent.

Adaptation is when a change in an organisms that makes it suited to a particular environment. It responds to their environment
Biotic is the word used to define features in an environment that are alive, or were once alive. Abiotic is the opposite of biotic.
Dogs get very distracted when they hear something and they bark or run.
That's right. When it's cold we put on more clothes
Actually, it is a longer list than that: It responds to the environment It adapts to the environment It grows It reproduces It eliminates waste It exchanges gases (respiration). It has a way of using nutrients for energy (metabolism). It has one or more cells It can move on its own. Even plants move a little.
One of the things that making an organism alive is its' response to stimuli. This can be internal or external.
