The United States Military Academy was built at an existing U.S. Army base - West Point. That's where it got its name. During the revolutionary war , West point garrison controlled access and movements along the Hudson river. By controlling the river it kept the British from dividing the colonies east and west of the river . Also, it allowed our troops to use the river to move supplies and equipment .
