The majority of the settlements in New France were along the St Lawrence River. This was the area of New France that was known as Canada. Quebec City, which is on the St Lawrence River, was founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608. Other areas of New France were Acadia (present-day Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island) and Louisiana (near the mouth of the Mississippi River).
