Caesar was supported by the legions who fought with him in his conquest of Gaul. These were hardened veterans who were better soldiers than the ones of other regions. These soldiers played an important role in Caesar's defeat of Pompey and his armies in the civil war these two men fought when Caesar crossed the Rubicon (he entered central Italy despite the senate ordering him not to do so).
