A crucial role. It was the main means of transportation and contributed much to the rise of Egypt as a civilization and great power. It is a slow moving wide river ideal for river traffic. Another advantage was the wind which usually blew from the north. This meant boats could drift south with the current and sail against the current going north. It is not to say that the river did not have its hazards such as shifting sandbanks, potentially dangerous animals such as hippopotamuses and crocodiles.

Two other great rivers (like the Nile both with deltas) which were crucial in the history of nations that became great powers comes to mind: The Rhine (Germany) and the Mississippi (United States)
