The "Patriots" were the American colonists fighting for independence from Britain. They were patriotic in that they supported their fellow colonists, the people who lived there, rather than the colonial power of the British Empire. After more than a century and a half of building farms and cities in the wilderness, many colonists considered themselves the rightful heirs to the future of the region.
