What role does the internal heat source play in shaping our planet?

The global mean surface temperature depends upon the energy gains & energy losses of earth. In order to keep the GMST at a steady state the energy gains must equal the amount of losses. The biggest loss from the planet earth is from infrared radiation which, although ultimately arrived from the sun, is still an energy loss. Once the infrared radiation energy loss leaves the surface and transfers into the atmosphere it enables us to have an atmosphere with clouds etc which then enables us to have life. Without energy sources we wouldn't be able maintain life on earth as it is currently known. So the internal heat (Energy plays a big part in shaping our planet).

What role does radiation play in warming the atmosphere?

Radiation from the sun warms the earth. Increasing amounts of greenhouse gases prevent this heat from reflecting back out into space, causing a global warming of the atmosphere.

What does the atmosphere does for earth?

the atmosphere does many things for earth. First, most organisms draw one gas out of the atmosphere and expel another gas into the atmosphere. For example, animals use oxygen from the atmosphere and expel CO2 while plants use CO2 and expel oxygen. Secondly, the atmosphere protects the surface of the planet by causing most asteroids to burn up before impacting the surface. Without our atmosphere, the surface of the earth would look more like that of the moon, riddled with craters. The atmosphere also has a big hand in erosion. water in the atmosphere condenses out as rain, snow, etc, and causes the majority of erosion. The atmosphere also protects us some against solar radiation, though the magnetic rings around the earth play a larger part in this.

How many layers does the atmosphere consist?

The atmosphere is divided into four layers. They are known as thermosphere, mesosphere, stratosphere and the troposphere with each of them having a specific role to play. .
