On a rainy day, a mother and a daughter stand in hope of a taxi in order to save themselves from the rain. Just then an old gentleman comes with a smile and speaks. The mother becomes doubtful as her golden rule says more the person is nice to you more suspicious you must become. But after a long conversation her greed on a lovely unaffordable silk umbrella made her toughness melt and she made a transaction-she gave a pound note to him in return of the silk umbrella.

As the mother was triumphantly explaining her daughter that she must not hurry things, and that the man was a titled man. Not far from this time, the daughter saw the old man who was supposed to be weary was scudding down the road. The mother was astonished and defeated in front of her daughter. She becomes determined to know why has he done so. They follow him to a pub where they see the man having a treble whiskey and the most important of all is that while walking out of the pub along with his hat and coat he jauntily picked up an umbrella and walked out of the pub. They again followed him to the place where their transaction took place and found another thin guy tricked by him in return of a pound. This is more or less the story.

After looking into it, we find that the umbrella is the central character-the most important role. At last the mother says," I'll bet he prays like mad for rainy days." This statement also justifies the above argument. The mother had found herself in a very advantageous and lucky position to get it in such a low price from a 'true gentleman'. But later she found out the real matter. So, in a rainy day the author has potrayed people who have nothing to cover them up and look around desperately in the rain to find some shade. Thus an umbrella in this case is a perfect thing to give-a man if in such a position will look forward to go to his home as quick as possible. Thus here the old man chooses the umbrella as the dice of his little game. He comes forward at the beginning with the umbrella and completes the transaction and sets up for another umbrella with another transaction and the game could go on for the whole night. Thus, we see that it is the umbrella itself which revolves around every part of the story-every part is incomplete without the umbrella; without it the story wouldn't have ended in such a humorous manner. Thus the umbrella is the central character of the story.
