Meanwhile, plants ' breathe' carbon dioxide and give off oxygen that the fish need. So they have a Swap. Also, plants use the fish 'poop' as fertilizer, which keeps the water cleaner.

The plants biggest function is not Oxygen since during the night they actually use up oxygen and not CO2.
The BIGGEST benifit is the removal of nitrites and nitrates which build up in the aquarium from decomposition and the fishes respiration(the gills act like kidneys and the water through osmosis removes ammonia from the gill plates)
Basicly the fish breathe out ammonia. The bacteria in the tank and filter convert the ammonia to Nitrites and then in to Nitrate and the plants use the Nitrates and Nitrites as food.
Water changes and filters are essential no matter how many plants you have in a tank vs how many fish.

∙ 11y agoPlants and mosses recreate their own food unlike humans. As humans we take in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. But plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen in the air. If there were no plants or mosses, we would not have the oxygen we need to survive. And without us, plants would not have the carbon dioxide they need to survive as well.

∙ 14y agoIt may become difficult to see into the aquarium. Also, if the plants run out of nutrients, they could 'crash' causing them to die and rot, crashing the aquarium (ie, killing everything).
