The men hunted and fished but this was also done with the womans help. Women gathered roots and fruit and took care of the camps while the men were out on the ocean. Everyone shared duties while in camp and worked hard. It was not an easy life.

Mi'kmaq respect for the women of the tribe can be seen in the petroglyphs at Kejimkujik In the overall Mi'kmaw tradition, the women of the tribe are given the highest respect and regard, women are the portals through which life and spirit come to earth. It is not possible for Mi'kmaq spirits to come to earth for the growth and healing needed without them. There would be no tribe. The man's role is therefore a supportive one, protecting the woman and family from harm, and providing those things that require great physical strength.
