Plants breathe in carbon dioxide, and breathe out oxygen. Photosynthesis is the mechanism that runs the process.

So, you could say, plants are factories that produce the oxygen necessary for animal life, and the foundation for all ecosystems. They use up the carbon dioxide that would poison and kill the animals.
