In photosynthesis, oxygen is a gas that is given off by the plant as a by product, which it cannot use. In cellular respiration, oxygen is used to fuel the process, and without it, h20 is not produced and the pyruvic acid will turn into lactic acid in the muscles!

In photosynthesis, oxygen is bonded to two hydrogens which are necessary for the proton gradient. The electrons are also needed to replace the lost electrons that were lost from chlorophyl. The water is split by photosystem II and the oxygen gas is released.

In cell respiration, the oxygen acts as the final electron acceptor. The electrons will not move through the transport chain in the mitochondrion without oxygen at the end. This is because of the electronegativity of oxygen. Without oxygen, cellular respiration would be anerobic and very inefficient. It would only produce 2 ATP. Aerobic respiration (O2 present) yields 36 ATP (though some is used in the process) which shows that it is much more efficient. Without oxygen in respiration, very little energy would be harvested.

What 3 important roles do water perform in cells?

H2O is necessary from a chemical basis for cellular respiration. It is utilized in the formation of AdrinoTriPhospate which produces energy in the cell. It is a transport mechanism for chemical interactions both to and from the cellular components. And finally it is necessary for thermal regulation.

Two essential roles that enzymes play in cells?

Enzymes are biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions that occur in everyday processes in a cell, such as cellular respiration. Enzymes are also used to break down wastes and old cell parts to be reused or discarded.
