they fertilize the egg so a baby chick can be hatched but a rooster is not needed for a hen to lay a regular egg that you are going to eat.

Free range chicken how long does it take to grow?

How long a free ranger will lay eggs depends first on the breed of chicken, production hens will lay more eggs for a longer period of time than dual purpose, rare or heritage breed birds. After breed of hen then environmental issues such as housing, time of year, nutrition, day light length all play an important part in laying eggs. But generally, assuming you have adult heritage birds you should see them laying eggs beginning in February or March and ending in October or November each year.

What role does a rooster play besides fertilizing hen eggs?

Roosters, in addition to fertilizing hen's eggs, help protect a flock from predators and lead hens in finding food during the day and roosting at night. If you watch a backyard chicken flock, you'll notice that the rooster calls to his hens if he finds some worms or bugs and wants to share the food with the other chickens. He also warns them of hawks overhead or cats and other predators that have entered the yard. At night, he leads them back to their chicken coop or roosting area. Hens can get along without a rooster, but they are better protected and cared for if there is one leading the flock.

Does eels look after their young?

No - like the huge majority of fish, the adults play no part in reproduction after laying/fertilising the eggs.

How is the chickens egg fertilized?

By the rooster. Most eggs are not fertile. Eggs bought in the stores are not fertilized. Roosters do not play a part in the production of eggs meant for consumers. Fertilized eggs can be bought from roadside markets and farm fresh. They are really no different that other eggs unless they are incubated under the right conditions with the intent to hatch chicks.

Why does Brian feel that he was foolish in thinking that the turtle had come ashore to play?

Brian feels foolish because he realizes that animals do not share human emotions or intentions. The turtle did not come ashore to play; it was simply following its natural instincts or seeking a specific goal such as laying eggs. Brian's attribution of human-like motives to the turtle was a result of his anthropomorphism.

From chicks to eggs how long?

Most chicks grow up and start laying eggs at about 20 week (5 months). This will vary by a week or two and the first eggs will usually be small and intermittent. Proper nutrition and husbandry (animal care) play a big role in this also.

Can kids play with one real egg for a year?

I don't know what this question is intended to mean. Should you let kids play with your bird's eggs in the nest? Absolutely not. Should you let kids play with the chicken eggs you bought at the grocery store? Probably not since eggs should be handled according to hygiene protocol (salmonella can be present on the shells) while raw.

What if your chickens are not laying eggs now like they were what could be the problem?

There are many reasons chickens slow egg production. Change in season can trigger a temporary slowdown. Chickens need a minimum of 14 hours of light to maintain good lay. If the slow in the late fall it could be you need to provide extra light in the chicken coop when they go in for the evening. Stress, weather, illness, molting and parasites also can play a part in a slowing of egg laying.

How old is a rooster when it is able to fertilise eggs?

A rooster typically will start showing sexual maturity at about 5 months. Prior to that the cockerel will play at being a fully active male but will be awkward and ineffective. The hens will not put up with this and shrug off his attempts to mount them. Somewhere within that 5 to 7 month period, he will learn and start to mate with his hens.

What is a capon?

It meant the same then as it does now: a castrated rooster. Although capons are not as often seen on supper tables as they used to be, they still can be. In Neil Simon's play The Odd Couple (female version) Florence cooks a capon.
