Not quite. Sod crops are grass crops grown for their root mass and/or their landscaping appeal. Cover crops are grasses and broadleaves, some of which are legumes, grown for their various abilities to shield soil from erosion, add organic matter to soil, build soil tilth, and add soil nitrogen. Sod crops are usually removed from the field, while cover crops are either tilled into the soil or left on top to decompose.
Root crops would basically be vegetables that are harvested in root form. Potatos, radishes, and carrots would be examples of root crops.
The crops consist of cereal grains, oats, rye, barley and wheat. These were very important to the peasants. Root vegetables were grown and stored over winter. Fruit was grown and eaten fresh, dried, or made into wine or cider. Fresh greens, such as lettuce, or cabbages, peas and fava beans were also grown. Certain spices and seasonings in Europe were grown, the most important of these is mustard.
