Italy did not control the land route to Asia. However, they did use the route to trade spices but eventually worked to find a sea route to Asia.
there were the ships he commanded one called Pinnace, Gabriel, and Michael. he was actually sailing on Gabriel. Pinnace was lost in a storm and Michael was abandoned.

The silk road was a route for the merchants to use to get to Asia, but it was a route that was very dangerous and long to do. The merchants who did brave the route did become prosperous if they got home with their goods and life.
They wanted a water route to set up trade with Asia and the Portuguese had already discovered an Eastern Route. If the Western Route were shorter, Spain would have an advantage. As it turned out, the Eastern Route was much shorter.
