The rpm required for an alternator will depend on the result that you want. At the very least, you will want 1200 rpm. The rpm's can go as high as 5000.
Crankshaft pulley diameter X RPM / alternator pulley diameter = alternator Rpm
When the truck is idling at low RPM, the charge supplied by alternator is not sufficient to run truck and charge battery of reverse polarity. Alternator expends majority of amperage toward charging (which never takes) and increase in RPM is required to spin alternator fast enough to accomodate ignition system and charging system in unison. for the most part rpm is counting from alternator (generator) there should be two wires one for rpm second for waking alternator
3000 rpm
If you have the wrong size battery in a Cadillac with the northstar will it effect the alternator voltage?
The RPM change affecting the light seems to indicate that it's the alternator. Perhaps it has a bad voltage regulator? Maybe it's not the right alternator for your car?
On auto alternator 1000 rpm
My rpm light came on but not my check engine light so what does that mean when the rpm light is on

Usually an early warning sign that the alternator needs to be replaced soon. Get it checked out
Most alternators are designed to run between 2000 to 10000 rpm.
