Fasting can be very severe. From dawn to dusk (or from the time it's possible to distinquish a white thread from a blue one) observant Muslims neither eat not drink, not do a number of pleasurable things. This is to build strength of character, so that one can endure in his devotion. As the Prophet observed, "Fasting is half of discipline; discipline is half of faith."
