In some Protestant churches, Baptism is the first step; in others instead of full Baptism there is christening (holy water sprinkled). After these steps, periodically the practice of communion is done, in which members drink wine (usually gape juice) and eat crackers, to commemorate the death of Jesus, who said, "This you will do in memory of me."

In the LDS religion (Mormon) it is believed that the bread of the Sacrament is symbolic of the body of Christ as stated in Matthew 26:26 and in The Doctrine and Covernants 20:77. The Sacrament is taken to renew or remember ones covenants made at baptism - to always remember Christ and to be a member of His church, which could be stated as a member of the body of Christ.

What is to be cast out and no longer recognized as a member of a church?

You may be thinking of excommunication. However, in the Catholic Church, excommunication just means that you are under a discipline that forbids you from receiving any sacrament except confession. The Catholic Church really does not have anything that casts you out of the Church. Once you are baptized you are a member of Christ's Body, and will remain such a member, and hence a member of the Church, for all eternity, unless you cast yourself into hell upon your death.
