What safe areas have the most reasonably priced houses with the closest or best commute to Manhattan New York City?

Looking on realtor.com, I see that Newark has some very reasonably priced, charming old houses. But, I'm wondering how safe that area is. I'd like to find a house in an area like Jersey City, etc., which has an easy commute. But, it seems like the prices have already gone up in Jersey City. I'm wondering what other areas would be the best bang for the buck. I'd love to live in Manhattan. But, to afford more more space, I'll need to live further out.
