Yes they did. They added limes to their diet. Because of this, sailors are called "Limeys". This was because of the defieciency of the vitamin C in their diet. See the related link for more information.
The disease is called scurvy.
Scurvy is caused by Vitamin C deficiency (which is why so many sailors used to get it: there was no fresh fruit on a long voyage).
Prolonged deficiency of vitamin c causes scurvy.
Scurvy is caused by a complete deficiency of Vitamin C, which can easy be obtained by eating fruit. If you are completely cut off from Vitamin C, expect to find your skin blotchy and your gums bleeding. Sailors didn't have fruit on their boats because the fruit eventually went bad; since they sailed for very long periods of time, bringing fruit along was impossible. Scurvy is not common at all anymore, thankfully.
scurvy was prevalant among the sailors, as they spent months on board a ship without fresh vegetables and fruit. this lack of fresh fruit and vegetables, meant a lack of vitamin c. a deficiency of vitamin c is what causes scurvy.
Scurvy is caused by a lack of vitamin C. found in cabbages and fresh citrus fruit such as lemons and limes. It was prevalent among sailors in the days of sailing ships because they did not get to eat fresh produce (containing vitamin C) for long periods of time.
A common problem pirates and other sailors would face was scurvy. Scurvy results from a deficiency in vitamin C. Pirates often faced this disease because they were aboard ships longer then fresh fruit or vegetables would last.

Scurvy is a deficiency disease, caused by a lack of vitamin C in the diet. It is relatively common nowadays (at least, in the developed world), but sailors used to suffer from it when they travelled across the oceans centuries ago, because they didn't bring fruit with them. Instead, their rations consisted of rum and biscuits. But that's another story.
Because they found that consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables, particularly those rich in Vitamin C prevented the development of Scurvy - limes are rich in Vitamin C
