You need first to get a college degree, and to attend military officer training. If you attend the US Naval Academy or the US Air Force Academy, you will get your officer training there. If you attend a civilian university, you take Air Force ROTC or Navy ROTC. (If you want to be a fighter pilot in the Marines, you go to Annapolis on the Marine track or to Navy ROTC at a civilian university.) Then you get selected for, and attend, basic flight school to learn to fly a plane. If you graduate, you will then have to go to another school to learn to fly the specific fighter you will fly once through training.

Having said all that, you must also consider: if you are in flight school and the service has enough fighter pilots, they have no problem with sending you to learn to fly cargo planes, bombers or helicopters and you must be prepared to accept this.
