The status bar displays system messages.
The system tray is the area on the right side of the taskbar that displays open services.

If everything on your iMac screen appears larger than normal the screen's resolution will have been changed - probably by some game that failed to switch it back again. Open System Preferences and then click on the Displays button. You can now select from available screen resolutions. The greater the resolution the smaller items will appear on the screen.
