Luke 3:23-38 and Matthew 1:1-17 each give (a different) lineage for Christ, but both of them trace him back to David.
The notion that he must be a descendant of David somehowprobably comes from a combination of several verses: 2 Samuel 7:12-16, Psalms 89:3-4, Isaiah 16:5, and Jeremiah 23:5-6 all refer to a son of the House of David ruling forever, and there are other similar references as well.
