Earth exists in space. The key difference is that here there is something (matter), whereas in space there is much less. You could say earth's atmosphere separates earth from the hard vacuum of space, and nothing exists between the lunar surface and space. But space essentially describes the three spatial dimensions occupied by our planet, its primary (the sun), and all we can perceive. Most of it is empty--hence "space."

Basically, the thing that seperates the inner and the outer solar system is a belt of asteroids, commonly known as the Kuiper belt, that is between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter. It is quite convenient because the outer planets (except for Pluto) are all gas based with maybe a small core of iron. the four inner planets are all rock based with large iron cores.
