I'm going to give the nonscientific answer, a bacteria can only maintain one shape because it don't have enough cells to mold into another shape there for it is not multicellular (or it is I think it depends on if its arche or EU bacteria).
So they can engulf the bacteria that is entering your body.

Bacterial cells do have a nucleus. Basically all cells have a nucleus! Bacteria cells are just a different shape like plant cells. If cells didn't have a nucleus they wouldn't be able to work properly!
