Printer selection is largely about cost, speed, and hassle. Laser printers are far, far faster than inkjet, capable of printing full books in a half hour or less, whereas an inkjet would be stuck working on such a task all day and would probably run out of ink long before it's done. Laser printers are a little more expensive, but they've recently dropped considerably in price, so I'd strongly recommend looking into one if you plan to do much printing at all. Inkjet is pretty outdated these days and more trouble than it's worth.
There are far less options when dealing with compact printers of any kind, namely inkjet. Deciding whether you want glossy or matte may be simple but the finish will look different depending on the power of the printer.
