Essentially nothing is being done. Yes, we are gradually increasing our supply of wind and solar power, but these tend to offset increasing demand. On the positive side, US oil imports have declined a little bit. But we're still burning coal like crazy, and doing essentially nothing to capture the carbon or to create carbon trading programs, etc. CO2 continues to accumulate in our atmosphere at the 40 billion tons per year we are releasing it, and the level continues its inexorable climb.

Currently, there are many measures put up by the authorities to counter global warming. One is to reduce the usage of materials such as plastic and paper, which harms the environment. Factories releasing huge amounts of greenhouse gases are being warned and have to go through modifications. Vehicles are now using alternative sources of power such as CNG and Electricity rather than petroleum, and some countries are restricting a certain number of vehicles on their roads a day. People are turning to alternative sources of energy such as solar and hydro power to power their machinery, instead of fossil fuels, which release a lot of greenhouse gases when burnt. Environmentalists are also working closely in the forests to make sure that loggers, miners, farmers and other people who use the forests for their job do not cut down too many trees.

We can not actually stop greenhouse gases affecting the earth's temperature, but we can take steps to minimise the increase in greenhouse gase levels in the atmosphere, thereby minimising the increase in temperatures.

Many of the world's political leaders have already committed to carbon emission reductions by 2025 or 2050 and most have taken steps towards meeting those targets. One of the most progressive methods is to impose a price on carbon emissions. If a business knows it will pay more if it continues to emit greenhouse gases at the present rate, it will be encouraged to find ways to achieve the same level of production while emitting fewer greenhouse gases, or it will choose new processes or technologies that are more energy-effficient, or design new products that offer the same consumer satisfaction at a lower neergy cost.

The principal means being used to impose a price on carbon emissions are carbon taxes or a carbon trading scheme. Arguably, a carbon trading scheme is more economically efficient than a carbon tax, because it allows certain industries to purchase carbon permits if they have no short term option to reduce their carbon, while encouraging other industries to profit by selling their carbon permits and move more quicky to low-energy technologies.

Of course, the global trend to generating electricity from renewable resources such as wind, solar and geothermal resource, is part of the effort being made to reduce carbon emissions. We can all help by replacing incandescent light bulbs by high efficiency ones, by switching off appliances when not in use, and by using air conditioning more sparingly and at higher temperature settings.

Yes. As an individual you can do much to help reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, by helping reduce our use of coal and oil.

You can do this by using less electricity: by replacing incandescent light globes by high efficiency one, by turning off appliances when not in use, by using air-conditioning less, by installing insulation in your home.

You can help reduce carbon dioxide emissions from transport by: using public transport more, buying a smaller car next time, using biofuels where possible.

What are Positive and negative consequences of the greenhouse effect?

The good aspect of the greenhouse effect, which is caused by water vapor, mostly, plus some minor gases like carbon dioxide (CO2), is that it keeps the world from freezing into one, big ball. The bad aspect is that carbon dioxide could turn it into an accelerated greenhouse effect, where the CO2 released from our burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas have overwhelmed the carbon cycle and the natural greenhouse effect. The accelerated greenhouse effect, with more and more CO2 and methane in the atmosphere is causing global warming, which is driving climate change.

How does the greenhouse effect warm the Earth?

The earth is surrounded by an atmosphere of air, made up of a number of gases. These gases form a 'blanket' which prevents all the sun's heat (infrared radiation) from reflecting back into space. If this greenhouse blanket was not there the surface of the earth would be about minus 18 degrees C (0ºF), instead of its present average temperature of 15 degrees C (59ºF). So this natural greenhouse effect is very useful. The gases that keep the earth warm are called greenhouse gases. The most important gas, causing about 75% of the natural greenhouse effect, is water vapor. The next most important is carbon dioxide.About 200 years ago humans started pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, when the first factories began. Today the concentration of carbon dioxide is 40 per cent greater that it was in the 18th century. We have increased other greenhouse gases too, like methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. This is made worse by deforestation because plants take in CO2 and without them, less carbon dioxide is taken in, which in turn traps more heat. These increased amounts of greenhouse gases trap more infrared radiation and the earth's lower atmosphere is warming up. This is known as the enhanced greenhouse effect and is causing global warming, which, in turn, is causing climate change.A:it traps the heat in.Green House Gases are found in the troposphere. The sun's rays pass through this layer and reflect off of Earth's surface. Then after that the reflected light hits the gases causing them to heat. This heat is then re-reflected towards earth where it increases the warming.Carbon dioxide traps energy from the sun.The sunlight travels through the atmosphere until it hits the earth. Upon hitting the earth the energy changes from light to heat. Heat will move to an area where there is less heat. Normally toward space. Gases like water vapor, Carbon dioxide, and methane slow down this movement and cause the heat to collect closer to the earth. This in turn heats the planet.Cutting down the rain forests increases the greenhouse effect because it reduces the amount of clouds in the atmosphere. This allows more light to reach the earth and change into heat.Cutting down northern forests decreases the greenhouse effect by allowing the snow to accumulate. This keeps the light from turning into heat by reflecting more of it into space.

What are ways to decrease the greenhouse effect?

There are two types of the greenhouse effect: the naturaland the man-made.The earth has always had a greenhouse effect. The natural carbon and water cycles support a greenhouse effect in the atmosphere where just enough of the sun's heat is kept back so that life can go on comfortably. Two hundred years ago we started digging up and burning fossil fuels (for industry, transport and to make electricity). Burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas releases all the carbon dioxide that had been hidden underground for millions of years. We also cut down the great forests of the earth, which can take carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, to slow it down. These two things, burning fossil fuels and deforestation are disrupting the normal greenhouse effect, which is now becoming an enhanced greenhouse effect, caused by man.The greenhouse effect you are probably talking about is the man-made one, the bad one. Now, how are we to prevent this enhanced greenhouse effect, which is the cause of global warming. We have to stop burning fossil fuels, and we have to reverse deforestation. We can do this by:Finding other ways of generating electricity, like solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biofuels, tide and wave energyFinding other ways of powering our transportStop cutting down trees and plant millions more.Smaller things we can do to help:Walk, ride your bicycle, or take the bus instead of always going by car.Don't waste electricity (turn off the lights, the radio, the TV and the computer when you're not using them).Reduce, reuse or recycle all kinds of items, from soda pop cans to clothes, to save energy and raw materials.Plant trees to help absorb excess CO2, and to provide shade and windbreaks to keep buildings at more even temperatures so they will require less energy for heating or cooling.A:Recycle, reduce, stop burning coal, drive and fly less, reduce greenhouse gases, and reduce our/people's carbon dioxide level.

Does the burning of gas cause global warming?

Gasoline is a fossil fuel, so burning it releases carbon dioxide from millions of years go. This extra CO2 is too much for the carbon cycle to deal with, so the normal greenhouse effect becomes an accelerated greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.

How is the earth's greenhouse effect good for the earth?

The normal, natural greenhouse effect is good for the earth. The earth's carbon and water cycles move carbon dioxide and water vapour in and out of the atmosphere. This supports the greenhouse effect which keeps the earth warm (about 13 degrees Celsius on average) and has done for millions of years. If there was no greenhouse effect we would all freeze to death. The accelerated greenhouse effect is what is happening now because of all the extra carbon dioxide in the atmosphere because we burn fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas for industry, transport and to generate electricity. And also because we have cut down so many trees that used to soak the carbon out of the air. This is causing unbalance to the earth's carbon cycle and is causing global warming and climate change. So the enhanced, or accelerated, greenhouse effect is bad for the earth.
