Oceanography is like geography in the sea. You study the geography of the seabed and the nature of the water, such as salinity, turbidity currents etc. Although oceanographers may like scuba diving it is unlikely that is will be part of their job because using SCUBA you can only visit a tiny amount of the oceans. Lots of oceanographers are involved in oil exploration for example where the water would be far to deep to reach with scuba.

practice swimming, stop smoking, get in shape, read your study book before classes. First night you will do a swim test to see your ability to proceed with classes. Also a health questionaire will need to be filled out concerning any breathing concerns. Do not take scuba classes because someone wants you to. It must be Your decision and not someone elses. Most of my classes I taught had someone who was there because a loved one or friend wanted them to. Bad idea. Otherwise enjoy the incredible world out there before you underwater. Well worth the time, money and experience.
