In order for a Christian to walk day by day in fellowship with God and with fellow believers, he must confess his sins, any sin, sins of thought, secret sins, and public sins. The Christian must drag them out into the open before God.
1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
God forgives the Christian's ongoing sin because the death of Jesus has paid the penalty for ALL sin past, present and future.
The Christian can confess his sin to God through Jesus Christ because Christ is a believers advocate. He pleads with the Father on the believer's behalf:
1John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
Biblical Answer:
Psalms 103 is a great chapter of The Bible that talks about God's view of us and how he wants to forgive. Here are some verses that stand out: (Taken from the NWT that uses the Divine Name rendered "Jehovah" instead of LORD)
Verses 2 & 3 - "Let me praise Jehovah; May I never forget all that he has done. He forgives all your errors And heals all your ailments;"
Verses 8-10 - "Jehovah is merciful and compassionate, Slow to anger and abundant in loyal love. He will not always find fault, Nor will he stay resentful forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor has he repaid us what our errors deserve."
Verses 12-14 - "As far off as the sunrise is from the sunset,So far off from us he has put our transgressions. As a father shows mercy to his sons, Jehovah has shown mercy to those who fear him. For he well knows how we are formed, Remembering that we are dust."
Because God is always "ready to forgive" those that repent of the wrong doing, we can be confident that if we leave the course that led us to sin, pray for forgiveness, and refrain from making the same mistakes over and over, he will "forgive in a large way". (Nehemiah 9:17; Isaiah 55:7; Matthew 6:12)
If you know you have sinned, you should ask forgiveness from the Father in Heaven. He will forgive you if you are truly sorrowful and repentant for what you have done.
