You will likely need a new cartridge. If you have an older version (Gameboy/ Gameboy Color/ Gameboy Advance) you can try replacing the battery. You will need a special screwdriver to open the cartridge, and good soldering skills to do it, though. Also, make sure the contacts are free from corrosion and dirt. Last I knew there was some really good cleaning stuff at www.stoneagegamer.com DO NOT just blow in it.
If this is a result of the MISSINGNO glitch in Red/Blue don't waste your time, the SRAM (the chip that stores the game save) is likely damaged.
