What type of water does the tropical fish need?

I do not use one on a regular basis, but I keep one on hand for emergencies. My filter produces enough surface agitation to sufficiently supply the tank with oxygen.

It really depends on tank size and type of fish.

Research on how to look after the different species of tropical fish and then decide which species you wish to keep. (can you afford the expence?) Then get your tank and everything else set up at least 3 weeks before buying any fish.

All fish need a minimum of 1 gallon of water per 1 inch of the fishes length. (For Tropical fish the water must be heated to a specific temperature range to suit the species.) The tank also needs a permanently running cycled filter to biologically convert the poison (Ammonia) the fish create (by living, pooing and breathing in the water) into harmless Nitrate. A tank also needs to have at least 50% of its water replaced every week to avoid a build up of Nitrates. Fish need to be fed at least once daily but twice is much better. A Thermometer is necessary to enable you to check on the temperature. The former things are needs and are essential. The following things are good to include. Live plants to use up Nitrates and provide Oxygen. Light is required for the plants to live and grow. A close fitting cover glass is good to prevent too much water loss through evaporation and to stop fish from jumping out. Nets are usefull to catch fish when required and magnetised glass cleaners are usefull for removing algae from the inside of the aquarium.

You need to know if the fish are Community fish, Semi Aggressive, or Aggressive. You'll also need to know how big the fish will get when full grown, so you can figure out how many fish you can fit in your tank without over crowding
