I think it sort of depends on where it's occurring and what the misuse is.
In a restaurant setting, broken or damaged equipment can cost big bucks to
replace or repair. You would also have to cook without that piece of equipment until
the repair or replacement has taken place. Staff must be properly trained in the use of
all equipment and management has an obligation to see that procedures are being followed.
In the home, I would guess that repair costs could be less, providing you're not talking
about a damaged major appliance. Most of us just don't spend $70 on one knife or $250 on a toaster.
Then, there's the ever present safety issue. Using equipment in a dangerous manner can
lead to cuts, burns bruises or even fatalities. Young children should be monitored all of the time and older kids should be trained and also monitored. I've always been a big fan of teaching kids to cook at a young age. It's something that will stick with them for a lifetime and can lead to career choices. (Gordon Ramsey cooked with his mum!) We are obliged to teach correct methods and correct tool selection and usage. If our rules are not followed, there should be consequences. You know best what would work for your family. If your problem is in a restaurant setting and you can't change the situation, talk to your supervisor.
Proper handling and use is critical to avoid accidents and unexpected consequences. Depending on what equipment you are using, misuse could potentially result in death.
