Many libraries have employees who can take your phone number if you did not bring your library card. Ask an employee while you are checking out your books.

If you are in need of a library card, then you can visit your local library for a card. You can make an account there. I don't really know anything about card catalogs. For me i visit the library and go to the helping center to create a library account and they just give me a library card. :)
