You could just get the person a nice card and a generic type of gift. For example, a nice tea/coffee mug for a teacher. Or a book for a friend who likes to read. You could also do a short poem to make it more "personal". You don't have to be great friends to write something nice; just think about how most people feel on a birthday-- they want to be told "happy birthday", to be remembered, and to know they have friends.
