Not seeing a sign does not exempt you from obeying the law indicated by the sign unless the sign was positioned in such a way that it was not visible from the road on which you were traveling. Also, in a residential area you should slow down to at least 30, even if there is no sign.
I appreciate you are "honest" but in this case pay up and shut up.
