Elements don't 'emit' colour. Colours are made by varying wavelengths of the electromagnetic force. Substances absorb certain wavelengths and reflect others. Those that are reflected pertain to the colour that we see. My car's surface absorbs purple, green and yellow light but reflects red light therefore it looks red.

When an atom is subject to energy the electron leaves the ground state and goes to a higher energy level. When it returns to a level of lower energy it emits one photon of light, which is the certain color depending on the atoms electron configuration. So, to answer your question, the electron falls to a lower energy level and in doing so emits one photon.

I don't emit any light. In a dark room, I am totally invisible, and the room remains dark.

When white light falls on me, my skin reflects primarily in the red-pink-beige-yellow region of the spectrum,
and absorbs everything else. My hair reflects almost every color equally, whereas the external surface of the
iris of my eyes reflects a soft, truly unbelievable blue, such as is often observed in limpid pools on a clear morning
when they catch the sun just so.

Occasionally, a strong transient blue or green reflection takes place. This is always due to substances in my
shirt or necktie, and may be ignored.
