Neither side weighs more than the other. The design is not added to the coin or carved out of the coin, it is punched in.

When coins are minted, a planchet or blank is inserted into the die. The coin is struck on both sides simultaneously.

The tremendous pressure applied by the press forces the metal on each side of the coin towards the other side of the coin.

The lower areas on the completed coin are actually compressed and the metal is denser in the lower flat surfaces.

This is a delicate balancing act when minting coins as too little pressure will cause a faint image to be produced, and too much pressure will produce ghosting where the reverse design is visible on the obverse.
