The stag is a symbol often used since prehistoric times, depicted in cave paintings as a source of food and a dangerous conquest. It was also a revered animal in Celtic culture where is symbolized purity, strength, and independence. The animal was also associated with the Celtic god of nature and hunting.

The stag or deer was a popular symbol around the world, showing up in Greek legends as pulling the chariots of a goddess, also in Budd-ism as "deer-disciples" appearing on the darma wheel of some Tibetan monasteries. The Chinese recognized the deer as a symbol of luck and good fortune, and some Christians consider the stag as a symbol of piety and being in God's care. For example; Psalm 42:1 reads: "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God." And Psalm 18:33: "He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights."

The deer or stag, as with many animals has a variety of meanings to different cultures, most of them consider the stag an honored and respected animal.
