There are a lot of factors to consider. Are the ceilings vaulted? what type of windows do you have? insulation in the walls? A good rule of thumb, though it does not always apply, and only if you live in So. Cali., would be to calculate 400 cfm per ton of airconditioning. you would be looking at approx. 6 tons of air or two 3 ton systems (they only make 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4 and 5 ton systems). There are many avenues you could go down. I personally like "zoned" systems due to the fact, when it comes to making repairs, you are only mostly making repairs to one furnace and a/c system rather than multiple systems. You could likely go as small as a 3 ton and break it up into 3 zones, or a 4 or a 5 ton system each with 2 zones. The problem is, on the larger ton systems, when only one zone is "calling", the amount of air required to "bypass" gets to be a lot. I do not recommend bypassing air into the return, though sometimes this is a better idea than "dumping" into a large area or "unused" area.
