In the UK 13 amps is the standard rating for a power socket. A 13 amp trailing plugboard with several sockets can be supplied by a 1.25 mm2 cable fed by a plug fitted with a 13 amp fuse. A 13 amp fixed spur must be supplied by a 1.5 mm2 cable. A set of fixed 13 amp sockets in house wiring must be suppled by a ring circuit using 2.5 mm2 cable and protected by a 30 amp cutout. 13 amp plugs and sockets designed for use on 240 volts ac, known internationally as Type G, are the plugs and socket outlets commonly used in the UK, Ireland and other countries which use the same standard national electrical power service.
They are normally installed on a "ring main" circuit which runs around one floor of a building or a section of a building. The ring main starts and finishes at the consumer unit (which in USA is known as a main breaker panel) and is constructed using a pvc-sheathed cable having three insulated 2.5 sq mm copper conductors: brown (live), blue (neutral and green/yellow (earth). Since 2006 every new ring main must be protected by an RCD (residual current device) - which in USA is known as a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) - and a 32 amp circuit breaker, both of which are installed in the main consumer unit.

Do not replace a 3 amp fuse with a 13 amp fuse, it gives much less protection. If you replace a 13 amp fuse with a 3 amp fuse, the 3 amp will likely blow, since the 13 amp fuse should be protecting a powerful appliance such as a heater, between 2000 watts and 3000 watts.
