A 2000 watt generator will work in this application very nicely. The equation to keep in mind is Watts = Amps x Volts. You can add up all of the amperages of the devices you are going to use and multiply that number by the voltage that the equipment operates on and that will give you the wattage value that you are looking for.

For one TV, 200 watts, and up to ten CFLs, 200 watts, so you can say 500 watts total. But TVs and CFLs normally have a poor power factor so the generator should provide 1 kVA. It will not run a kettle or any form of heating.

In order to determine what size generator you need to power your home without interruption you should have a load analysis done by a qualified electrician or generator vendor. Most homes require a 5000 - 7000 watt generator.

If you average 2000 kw of usage per month what size generator do you need?

You would need to size your generator to power the items that you need to power during a power outage (freezer, refrigerator, etc.). The fewer items you need to power the smaller the generator you can get. Items such as water heaters, air conditioners/heat pumps and electric furnaces use more energy than most smaller generators can supply. Any one item plugged into a 15 amp outlet would use less than 2000 watts each (max). A 5000 watt (continuous rating) generator should have no problem powering a refrigerator, a freezer and a few lights. Larger items like A/C, water heaters and electric furnaces would need to be turned off for a generator this size.

Choosing The Right Size Home Generator For A Power Outage?

Home generators that are intended to be used during power outages need to be large enough to handle the electricity use in a house. The amount of power that is needed is the total of all devices that will be used with the generator at the same time after power has been shut off. This can include refrigerators, heaters and even lights. The generator needs to have more than this wattage at startup and needs to be able to sustain at least that much electricity while the generator is running over an extended period of time. Generators that are too small can actually harm the appliances in a home.
