The paddle wheel on the vessel was about 11.5 feet. It was powered by twin Caterpillar engines. This was a true paddle wheel boat NOT a stern drive like so many. While idle speed (about 3 knots) the wheel turned about 9 RPM. At max speed about 10 knots the stern wheel turned 18 RPM

I was the last skipper to pilot the then "Spirit of Sacramento". A few days later she was set ablaze at the dock by "unknowns"

Is a ferry a steamboat?

Not necessarily. A steamboat is a boat that is powered by steam (by propellers or paddle-wheels), so if the ferry is steam-powered, then it is a steamboat. Most ferries today have diesel engines and are not steamboats. Even if you can visually see a paddle wheel on a boat, it most likely still a diesel boat due to diesel being a lot safer. A lot of recreational river cruise boats have a paddle wheel added for show while the boat is actually being powered by a diesel engine. Most steamboats today aren't your classic "Mississippi Paddle-Wheel Riverboat" and are steam powered via propellers.
